
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released its subscription data for January 2025, revealing a mixed trend in subscriber additions among India’s top telecom operators.
According to the report, Reliance Jio added 6.86 lakh mobile users in January 2025, a significant drop from its 39.06 lakh user addition in the previous month. In contrast, Bharti Airtel showed robust performance by adding 16.53 lakh subscribers. Meanwhile, BSNL continued to lose ground, registering a net subscriber loss of 3.69 lakh users, worsening slightly from the 3.16 lakh loss in December 2024.
As of January 31, 2025, Reliance Jio remains the market leader in broadband (wired + wireless) subscriptions with a base of 476.58 million, followed by Bharti Airtel at 289.31 million and Vodafone Idea at 126.41 million. BSNL held 35.77 million subscribers.
The total number of telephone subscribers in India stood at 1,192.03 million, reflecting a net monthly increase of 2.10 million. Wireless (mobile + 5G FWA) subscribers increased to 1,157 million, growing at a rate of 0.55%. Rural wireless tele-density improved slightly to 58.07%, while urban tele-density touched 125.02%.
TRAI also highlighted a surge in mobile number portability (MNP) requests, with 14.14 million submissions in January alone, taking the cumulative MNP requests to 1,093.33 million.
Additionally, the share of active mobile users (VLR) stood at 92.51% of the total wireless subscriber base, with Reliance Jio maintaining a high proportion of active users at 95.66%.
